A Year in Review

An Update from Our CEO

Cathy with firefighters CEO Cathleen Collins shares in this upcoming Summer Newsletter a review of this past year and celebrates the mark of UCP-OC’s 60 years of serving Orange County

2013 marks a special year as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary in Orange County, and the different core programs, people and events that have played a vital role in our organization. We are excited to reflect on the past 60 years and those who have made a difference this year to empower families and help children challenged with special needs to live a “Life Without Limits”.

Thank you to all of our donors who contributed to our Golf Tournament, Life Without Limits Gala and our Annual Fund Campaign. With your support we were able to raise more than $1.398 million this year!

October launched our fundraising season with our Annual “Autumn Golf Classic” and Brianna Cup Golf Tournament, chaired by Scott Pievac CEO of SPC Retail Display Group with lead sponsor Dana Dowers and DLD Insurance. Please Save the Date for this year’s tournament on Monday, October 21, 2013.

In March our support guilds ushered in spring with two spectacular events, the first a festive Fashion Show hosted by Psi Delta and the second a glamorous Casino Royale, hosted by the Sea & Sky Guild and chaired by Guild Founder and President, Linda Beresford.

On Friday May 10, 2013 we held our most successful Life Without Limits Gala to date. Honoring our 60th Anniversary and the philanthropic leadership of Michael K. Hayde. His example of community support and personal philosophy on giving back made him the perfect recipient of our UCP-OC Impact Award. We are very grateful for Mr. Hayde’s support of our organization and the children and families we serve. We are especially grateful for our many event sponsors including lead Life Without Limits Sponsor, The Argyros Family Foundation. For a complete list of event sponsors please see our upcoming newsletter.

UCP-OC is fortunate to have a team of skilled and professional therapists, administrative staff and program specialists who work tirelessly throughout our community. Our collaborative and coordinated children’s services strive to meet the comprehensive needs of families to ensure the support they need throughout a child’s life. This year many of our therapists and staff have spent countless hours outside of UCP-OC earning new certifications and accreditations to further serve the children that come to UCP-OC.

You can remain updated on the happenings at UCP-OC by following us on our Facebook, blog and even Twitter page!

Thank you for supporting our mission to serve the Orange County community and acknowledging the importance of the programs and services our organization provides. Please consider a gift to UCP-OC to support our Annual Fund this year. Annual gifts to UCP-OC help to ensure that every child in need of services receives help and supports critical infrastructure needed to provide excellent care and service. Most importantly, your support helps to ensure a Life Without Limits for every child with disabilities!

OC Marathon is coming

Orange County Marathon benefitting UCP-OC!

May 5, 2013

What better way to start off your New Year by signing up to participate in the OC Marathon, running or walking to support UCP-OC?!

For the 7th year Team Jake will be running in the 5K, half and full marathon in support of UCP-OC and the difference being made in the lives of children with disabilities. Run/walk towards the common goal of raising funds and awareness for UCP-OC.

There are 3 main ways you can get involved:

  1. Run/Walk
  2. Volunteer
  3. Donate

Who is Team Jake?

“Team Jake is a group of runners, walkers, fans, and volunteers who help us embrace the OC Marathon event and all that it means to our family.  January 8th, 2006 I ran my first marathon.  I ran to honor my son Jake, to raise money in support of United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County, and to “cross something off the list”.  The entire Robert/Holman family waited patiently for my finish and we spent the afternoon together celebrating a rather unimpressive finish; but the OC Marathon had given us reason to spend the day together.  We did not realize what an amazing gift that was until the next morning when we discovered that our precious son, Jake Ryan Lee Robert, our four and a half year old boy with Cerebral Palsy had passed away in his sleep.

 Team Jake was born.

Since then, each year our amazing network of family, friends, and numerous friends and family of friends have joined us. Each year brings new runners, new fans, new memories and an enduring sense that the wonderful spirit of Jake lives on.”

Hi Families,

If you haven’t heard yet UCP-OC will be participating in the OC Marathon yet again! This year Team UCP-OC Families will be running/walking alongside Team Jake’s 300+ runners.

At UCP-OC we know that every family has a story to tell, and we want to give each family the opportunity to tell it. By signing up for Team UCP-OC Families you can do this, spread the word about UCP-OC and help fundraise to support the many ways we serve the community of Orange County. Please sign up and join the many families walking in the 5K in celebration of the children in their lives that have benefitted from UCP-OC.

And, if running or walking isn’t for you, you can help our teams reach their fundraising goal by donating to our website or just volunteer to help pass out water and cheer on marathon runners!

It is going to be a blast, and we can’t wait to see everyone there!

  • If you would like to join us, please register for the OC Marathon at www.ocmarathon.com (try to sign up for the 5k, that’s where most of us will be) and don’t forget to show support for UCP-OC by choosing us under “Charity Program”.

Child of the Month: February 2012

February 2012: Damian & Victoria

Taking a look at the picture to your left I am sure you have noticed that this month is not just one child of the month. No, this month is double the fun with Damian and Victoria, the children of the month for February!  “Victoria and Damian were brought into this world much too early, much too small and very sick. They were born at only 27 weeks weighing only 2lbs each.”  As parents, Miriam and David had to watch as their children fought for their life. Between the two children, everything that could happen to a newborn did, and it was four months before the parents could bring both healthy children home.

The months and years to come brought new obstacles the twins had to overcome, but each obstacle was met with the help of UCP-OC. Around one years-old the twins were showing signs of delayed development and a family’s PT friend referred the family to UCP-OC. She simply said, “get connected and get over there. You are looking for the best therapy and you will find it there.”

Both children came to UCP-OC for PT with Moira and Melanie, soon they began some OT with Myra, Infant Stimulation with Ria and most recently Speech with Patty and Christine. With this dream team, the twins worked on starting to crawl, fine and gross motor skills and speaking. Soon they started crawling and now they are cruising around the lobby walking greeting everyone they can.

Victoria and Damian love it at UCP-OC, and look forward to their sessions with their friends at UCP-OC.

Damian and Victoria are two peas in a pod, I dare to say they are opposites that keep each other going. Damian is cautious and calculated. He analyzes each situation before making a move. Although he may be the rule follower, he is also the snuggler of the family and will shower love on those around him. Victoria is the dare-devil. She will climb anything, and there is no stopping her. She is not what you would call a “lap child” but rather she is more cautious to show affection…unless you are a member of UCP-OC, then she will love on you!

The Daboub family is the first family walking in the OC Marathon on Team UCP-OC Families for their two children and to raise money for UCP-OC.

“Now at almost two years old our babies are doing everything two years should be.  Thanks to the help of UCP of Orange County our babies have reached all of the milestones that we were once told may never happen.

On May 6th, 2012, we will be walking the 5K in the OC Marathon…. Not only in celebration of our miracle babies, but to help raise much needed awareness and funds for UCP-OC.  They need our help in order to continue offering these great services to so many children in need in our community.  So join Team UCP-OC Families and let’s help this wonderful place so many kids depend on.”

Life’s a Journey with CP and Me

Hello friends at UCP-OC!

I hope you have enjoyed the holidays are starting 2012 off right! There are many things I would like to accomplish this year, but most importantly I am just focusing on staying healthy and doing well in my second semester of college. I hope to continue to spread awareness about cerebral palsy, especially to the younger people of our time because that is where we can make the greatest impact! I feel like the more people who know that there are children and teens with disabilities that aren’t getting the help they need; the more programs can continue to grow and help those who need it. It is all about education and awareness, right?

So I have been trying to up my cardio a little bit, because I would like to get a team of students and whoever else is motivated, to participate in the OC Marathon raising money and awareness for UCP-OC! Running is not easy for me, but it makes me feel strong and healthy, and I hope to continue to run for as long as my legs will let me. Since I only have CP on my left side, my right leg fatigues much faster than the average person, which makes me have extra tight leg muscles. Thankfully, I know when I need to stretch and take some easy days so I don’t overdo it!  Anyway back to what I was saying earlier, my goal for the run to get sponsors to fundraise a bit, but since we are all on a college-student budget it might just be a great opportunity to get out there and have some fun in honor of a great cause! I am probably going to get a new pair of running shoes soon, so if any readers know a great brand for someone like me with CP then go ahead and post a comment if you’d like! I’d appreciate any tips. 🙂 I will keep you all on the update about the progress to get a team of runners together, but for now I just hope some people will be open to the idea when everyone gets back for the semester in February. The team for the OC Marathon is “Team Jake & UCP-OC Families, so if you are interested and want to join, (or sponsor someone) let us know on the blog here and I am sure we can get you some more information. You can also follow this link to the page, click here.

On Saturday, February 11th, I will be speaking at a fundraising event in support of people with disabilities and UCP-OC. The event, Sea & Sky Guild’s Classic Vegas, will be an evening of dinner, cocktails, silent and live auctions and casino gaming all in support of the Sea & Sky Scholarship Therapy Fund for UCP-OC. I am honored to be a part of a night dedicated to spreading awareness about our common cause. Hopefully I will see some of you there!

Well I am off today to get my hair trimmed from my twin sis who is in cosmetology school… (I know what you’re thinking—uh oh…but she is doing so well and takes clients on a daily basis!) Great for me, though—I can always have nice hair. 🙂

Take care everyone, and I’ll get back to you in February!

Here is the invitation for the Sea & Sky Guild Classic Vegas. If you are interested you may purchase a ticket on UCP-OC’s website. Click here to go to the site.
